Commonly known as “the prettiest town in Canada”, Lunenburg was named one of the world’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites by the United Nations in 1995. Settled in the mid 1750’s by Germans and Swiss, its citizens still retain one of the most interesting accents in North America. Now a bustling fishing port, Lunenburg was once considered to be the busiest shipbuilding town in the world, and was the birthplace of the world-famous racing schooner Bluenose. The town’s distinctive architecture and extraordinary scenic beauty is a colourful reminder of our maritime heritage, which can be explored at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic (Admission included). Afterwards, enjoy some free time to wander the quaint streets and browse the many handcraft stores for souvenirs.
After you enjoy a group lunch at a local restaurant, join us on a walking tour conducted by local historian, to learn the fascinating folklore of Lunenburg’s past and present. Highlights of this downhill stroll include the Lunenburg Academy, the details of the UNESCO designation and a sample of the seafood delights associated with a traditional Lunenburg “Mug Up”.
On the return drive to Halifax, a brief picture stop will also be made in Mahone Bay, famous for its picturesque scene of three waterfront churches. You’ll love this tour along our beautiful South Shore!
Optional Add-On: Lunenburg Boat Tour (1 Hour)
This 45-minute tour concentrates on a more in depth look at Lunenburg’s Historic waterfront. For those with limited time, we offer this tour which starts with the boarding of the Chris L and an introduction on the features of the boat and safety procedures. Upon leaving the dock, we tour along the UNESCO World Heritage site of Old Town Lunenburg and its historic waterfront. Commentary is given on the active fishing fleets and the fish processing plant while you enjoy the view that most only see on postcards. Our crew will then take you to where their traps are set and haul a few, giving a brief explanation of the lobster fishing life style. A brief pause in the tour allows for photo opportunities. Pose with a live lobster or take your own picture of the famous Lunenburg waterfront. The boat passes closely by the Battery Point Lighthouse for more photo opportunities before returning to our berth.
